Creating a WordPress User

To get started creating your first WordPress user, locate the Users menu on the left-hand side of the WordPress dashboard. You can either hover over the Users link and select add new or click to expand it to reveal the submenu.

There are four roles that you can assign to people who you want to blog with: Administrator, Editor, Author, and Contributor.

An administrator has full and complete ownership of a website and can do absolutely everything. This person has complete power over posts/pages, comments, settings, themes, plugins, import, users – everything. Nothing is off-limits, including deleting everything.

An editor can view, edit, publish, and delete any posts/pages, moderate comments, manage categories, manage tags, manage links and upload files/images.

An author can edit, publish and delete their posts, as well as upload files/images.

A contributor can edit their posts but cannot publish them. When a contributor creates a post, it will need to be submitted to an administrator for review. Once a contributor’s post is approved by an administrator and published, however, it may no longer be edited by the contributor.

A contributor does not have the ability to upload files/images.

In your comment settings, if you’ve selected “Users must be registered and logged in to comment”, once they have created an account, they will be given subscriber role. Subscribers only have the ability to leave comments.

Now that we know what the roles are capable of, let's take a look at what information is needed to add a user.

Username: Use something that is easy to remember for the user you are adding. They will need to remember the username to log in. A good strategy is to use the first letter of the user’s first name with their last name. For example, tgriffin, jsmith, etc.

Email: Make sure to double-check the email address, as users will need this in order to reset their passwords, or to receive email notifications.

First Name, Last Name and Website: This is an optional field. Users can also edit their information once the account has been created.

Password: You must use a strong password. We recommend using an online strong password generator for this purpose. Below the password fields, you will see a checkbox which you can check to send the password to the user via email. The users will receive their login information on the email address you entered above.

After all the information is entered select Create User. The newly created user will be sent an email with their new credentials.
