FTP

BackupBuddy supports File Transport Protocol (FTP) as a Remote Destination . FTP is the most common way of sending larger files between servers. Most web hosting accounts provide FTP access.

Adding FTP as a Remote Destination

  1. Once on the Remote Destinations page, click the +Add New button to add your FTP destination.
  2. From the Add New Destination page, configure the following destination settings:
    1. Destination name - Name of the new destination to create. This is for your convenience only.
    2. Server address - [Example: ftp.foo.com] - FTP server address. Do not include http:// or ftp:// or any other prefixes. You may specify an alternate port in the format of ftp_address:ip_address such as yourftp.com:21
    3. Username - [Example: foo] - Username to use when connecting to the FTP server.
    4. Password - [Example: 1234xyz] - Password to use when connecting to the FTP server.
    5. Remote path (optional) - [Example: /public_html/backups] - Remote path to place uploaded files into on the destination FTP server. Make sure this path is correct; if it does not exist BackupBuddy will attempt to create it. No trailing slash is needed.
    6. Migration URL - Enter the URL corresponding to the FTP destination path. This URL must lead to the location where files uploaded to this remote destination would end up. If the destination is in a subdirectory make sure to match it in the corresponding URL.
    7. Archive limit - [Example: 5] - Enter 0 for no limit. This is the maximum number of archives to be stored in this specific destination. If this limit is met the oldest backups will be deleted.
    8. Transfer mode - [Default: Active] - Determines whether the FTP file transfer happens in FTP active or passive mode. Some servers or those behind a firewall may need to use PASV, or passive mode as a workaround.
    9. Use FTPs encryption - [Default: disabled] Enable high security mode (not supported by most servers). Select whether this connection is for FTP or FTPs (enabled; FTP over SSL). Note that FTPs is NOT the same as sFTP (FTP over SSH) and is not compatible or equal. (The PHP Library that BackupBuddy uses supports Explicit Encryption and not Implicit Encryption. Which means that services like Citrix ShareFile may not work as they no longer use Explicit Encryption and only use Implicit Encryption.)
    10. Disable file management - When checked, selecting this destination disables browsing or accessing files stored at this destination from within BackupBuddy. NOTE: Once enabled this cannot be disabled without deleting and re-creating this destination.
  3. Once you've entered all of your settings, Test Settings and click the +Add Destination button.
  4. Your new location will now show on the Remote Destinations page in BackupBuddy. If you need to change your settings, click the gear symbol to the right of the destination.
